Prairie Style

It’s probably hard to tell from my usual posts, but I know a couple of things about architecture. Which is sort of pathetic, really, since I’ve got an actual degree in architecture. But that’s neither here nor there.

Prairie style architecture, according to this link*, is “marked by its integration with the surrounding landscape, horizontal lines, flat…roofs…, and restraint in the use of decoration.” So it’s no wonder that this scene seemed to be a fine example!

Welcome!

Thanks for hanging in for the run of photos from the Cliffhouse Project. I’ve been fascinated by this place since it was just a random urban ruin, and am excited that it’s got someone who loves it and who has a vision for its future.

Stick around and I bet you’ll see more photos from here, as it evolves into its new life.

Reach the goal

Yep, keep climbing that hill* and eventually you’ll make it to the top!

* I know. It’s not really that much of a hill, to normal people. But if you’re from here, it is actually rather formidable.

Precipice (from the bottom)

Remember yesterday’s photo, at the very top of the precipice? Same thing here, only from the bottom looking up. See what I mean about flatland “canyons”?

Precipice (from the top)

We call it a canyon. People from places that have actual, noticeable topography would probably call it a dent in the ground.

The Cliffhouse Project is located on the canyon, with the remains of an old motor court on the top. When I made this image, I was standing on the top, looking down at the old driveway. It’s quite a drop-off (if you live where it’s flat), and we have to be careful of vertigo.
