bird + bus stop
Posted by Melinda Green Harvey
Heat. And then some more heat. That was my main impression of Barstow. It was the kind of heat that dried everything out, that bleached the color until it wasn’t there.
But hey! At least people waiting for the bus got some good shade.

round beds, you say?
Posted by Melinda Green Harvey
…and this begins a bunch of posts with photos from my collaborative Route 66 project. Since October 2021, photographer VC Torneden and I have worked on a project we call The Other Side; we’re documenting the overlooked parts of Route 66, the small (and dying) towns, odd signage, and anything else that captures our attention.
It’s important to note that here in Barstow, you can find remodeled rooms AND round beds in the very same location. That’s a travel win, right there. Possibly.

Presbyterian
Posted by Melinda Green Harvey
I’d driven right by the interstate exit to Barstow a lot, but never thought about getting off the highway to see what the town might have to offer. Now, of course, I realized that all these years are just a series of missed opportunities to make photos of a place that’s disappearing.
But at least I got there while the Presbyterian church was still there…
