church + grackles

Don Toothaker, my shooting partner and excellent friend, and I enjoyed the town of San Elizario – there are a lot of reasons why but if I try to write them down here, they start to sound trite or maybe a little bit like I’m trying to hard. Suffice it to say, then, that we were in sync with what we felt and what we saw and how we felt about what we saw. And we saw and we felt a lot. The day was beautiful.

…and His face was turned toward the sun

Jesus had lost his hands (I don’t know what happened), but at least he could face into the sun and watch the dying of the day.

sant’agata’s day begins

The bells woke me up. I stepped out onto my little balcony to see what the day looked like, and this was what greeted me.

And it only got better.

one in a crowd

That face. That face (and the man attached to it) was all I saw in a huge crowd of people heading toward the Cathedral. His life’s story is right there for everyone to see.

thin man

This guy is quite svelte, isn’t he?

Also, he’s modeling the traditional outfit that devotees – of all ages and sizes (s0, not just skinny dudes) –  wear during the feast day celebrations for Catania’s patron saint Agata. (Sant’Agata is also remembered for being the protector of women with breast diseases, bell smelters and firefighters.)
