the gloom of twilight gathers fast

Here’s the last one – for now – from the South Solon Meetinghouse. It was a transformative few days and I am grateful that I was able to attend the workshop.

One afternoon while we were in the meetinghouse, I sat in a pew and looked through one of the hymnals. I was looking for words, for phrases that caught my eye. By the time I was done, I had filled two pages in my journal with pieces of songs that appealed to me. I often title my images with a few words from a song and my intent that afternoon was to mine the words for future photo titles.

And from that list, I drew the following list of titles:

  • thanks + love + faith + grace
  • our strength proved false
  • since happier light
  • of unseen things above
  • wondrous grace
  • the gloom of twilight gathers fast

So, l will gently leave my meetinghouse photos here. They are filled with thought, with intention, and with the unrelenting joy of seeing. It is my hope that you found something in them that was meaningful.

the fiddle player

You might be one of the people who think an Irish fiddle group is out of place at a German restaurant. I would probably be with you on that, except that I saw/heard it for myself. And in context, it made perfect sense.

I played the violin in junior high; the only part of it I could do successfully was hold the bow. Playing notes and managing to have my fingers in the right places was completely beyond my capabilities. This fiddle player was so good and it amused me that her grasp of the bow was completely unorthodox, which diminishes my exceedingly modest violin accomplishment all the way down to nothing…

Terri Hendrix’s Guitar

090216

Almost twenty years ago, my friend Darryl called to invite me to a concert; he said the musician was great and would be worth the drive (90 miles, one way). I turned him down, because it was in the middle of the week and I didn’t want to get home that late. Darryl, never one to take no for an answer, kept asking and asking until it was finally easier to give in.

And so it was that on that night in Nazareth, Texas, I became a fan of Terri Hendrix and her music and have followed her career ever since. Recently, she and her musical partner, the incomparable Lloyd Maines stopped by Lubbock to perform at a house concert.

(Another thing that happened at that house concert is that I was called on stage to sing the chorus of the encore song. My singing out loud in public actually violated several local ordinances, mostly dealing with nuisance noises, but I wasn’t arrested or anything. Also, I stood as far away from the mic as I could get.)
