shady

Oh, yes – here I go again, shooting photos through dusty windows into buildings full of random discards. Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of lamps and most of them are just as nice as the ones you can see here. If you get my drift.

elect dep

I bet I’ve made a thousand trips through Crosbyton. Yet, somehow this trip marked the first time I turned north off the highway on Avenue E. It was definitely worth the extra 1.5 blocks of driving because I found the City Elect Dep and also learned that tires are not, apparently, eligible for any upcoming election.

There is always something to learn, even if you have to make it up yourself.

everything will run out

Mt. Zion Cemetery, in Crosby County, isn’t visible from the highway. To get there, you drive past a farmhouse and down a narrow dirt path called Dump Ground Road. Most of the graves are unnamed. Most of the people buried there are black. So that’s one thing to think about.

And the other thing to think about is how this part of the state sits atop the Ogalalla Aquifer, whose water is pumped out (mostly for irrigation) at a rate that far outpaces its replenishment. (Want to know more? Read Running Out: in search of water on the high plains by Lucas Bessire.)

Anyway, somethings things line up in a particular way that shifts your brain around and lets you think about it all in a different way.

the reason

One of the little photography jokes I use to keep entertained is finding juxtapositions of things that are unrelated and smashing them together in an image.

Unless Jesus has/had a dog allergy and that’s why they’re banned.

creepy-town

So. Littlefield. It’s….a place, for sure.

I looked through the window at this particular abandoned place and the conglomeration of things – those candleholders, the arched staff things, the chair, the mattress leaning on the wall, and that silhouette on the wall gave off a particularly sinister vibe.

Now, you might think that this plus that creepy dude from yesterday’s photo would have been enough to keep me from returning. But maybe you also know me and won’t be surprised to find out that I went back just a week later. And it was still creepy-town.
