fisherman

I was dreaming of Sicily the other day when I was editing images. I mean, I’ve dreamt of Sicily every day since I got back, so that’s not really anything new. Anyway, that led me to prowl around my photos, both for nostalgic reasons and also to mine them for editing.

This portrait of a man fishing along the harbor in Palermo had been waiting on me to notice it; I appreciate its patience.

the pensive man

You may remember an earlier photograph of a street-side mechanic? This is the man whose hands you saw in that other image. In case you wondered.

We were in his vicinity for several hours and that motorcycle never seemed to become operational while we were there; his face tells the same story.

heading home

This family had completed their shopping at the courthouse square farmers’ market and were heading home. Eventually. It took a minute to get organized; that one kid on the right sort of had some other plans in mind.

it is very wide

As you can see, Long’s Cemetery is also very wide.

PS – Did you think I could go a whole month (and a 31-day one!) without posting any black and white images? No, I didn’t either. Thank you for your patience. Guess what’s back tomorrow?

clinton

Every time I see a grave like this – where a young person died – I can’t help but think about how their mother felt when she heard the news.
The first time I remember thinking about it was a long time ago, when I lived in Louisiana and was not yet a photographer. We were driving around in the rural areas north of Lake Pontchartrain. Somewhere. I don’t know where we were. But the details I recall are as clear as though it happened earlier today: it was muggy and cloudy; it was a narrow two lane road; there were dense stands of tall and skinny pine trees; the cemetery was on the left; there were graves right up to the edge of the cemetery. And one of them had a toy truck, a red one that may have been a fire engine, placed just next to the headstone.
It impacted me then. And still does.
