Bowling alley (out of business)

It was almost too good to be true: an out of business bowling alley with front windows that my camera and I could look through. And as the best possible bonus, there were those three bowling balls on the checkered floor, looking for all the world like some kind of abandoned game.

Two Worlds

Parts of Tucumcari like like they are stuck between the wind-energy present and the Route 66 past. It’s easy to tell which is which.

I don’t know – for some reason it felt like a couple of people were outside, watching me eat lunch. Crazy, right?

Our Business

With all the fine amenities this place offered – in addition to that rather fantastic sign – it makes me wonder why I failed to book us a room here. I hope I’m not losing my trip-planning mojo.

Mother Road

The famous Route 66 was one of the first highways in the national highway system; it covered some 2,440 miles from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California. It lost its official designation in 1985, after it had been replaced in its entirety by the Interstate highway system.

But it still lives on in legend and myth. And, of course, in giant roadside billboards.
