tools of the trade
I can’t even begin to understand everything we saw during the Sant’Agata procession. Devotees in the streets purchase candles (yard long ones, not like little American birthday candles) which are handed up as offerings to the men on the candalore ((gilded wooden constructions). At various points during the three-day long procession, the parade stops while candles are removed in order to make way for more. At one of these stops, we stood behind a pair of priests and I had plenty of time to work on an image of this wooden rosary and its shadow.

devotee
On the morning of the first day of the Feast of Sant’Agata, I looked out my hotel window and saw a solitary devotee heading toward the cathedral.
It wasn’t long before the streets would be filled with people, many of them dressed in the traditional feast-day clothing like this gentleman. This moment, although I didn’t realize it then, was the only bit of quiet for a long time: the parades celebrating the Saint are loud and joyous.

tricks to trucks
It was right about in here the other night, as we drove around so I could photograph stuff from the car window, that a woman in a white truck seemed to find our actions suspicious enough to warrant her keeping an eye on what we were doing. She followed us all the way through the neighborhood and for a few miles after we left. I guess she wanted to make sure we were REALLY leaving. Or (and this is less likely) she was wanting to copy my Artistic Technique.
Either way: we made it home.
But aside from all that, the sign that says “tricks to trucks” makes me laugh. I want it to be the title of some sort of redemption tale of a sex worker who found her true calling as a truck mechanic.

the hangers on
I’d seen this building before, from the adjacent interstate, but had never gone past the “I should probably go over and look at that” part of my thought process.
Finally, the other night, I did get over there. And I have plans to return: it really was more interesting than I thought it was going to be.
