power to the people
…and here we are, back to my regular stuff.
I have now attended a total of three protests in my entire life, and this was the most recent one.
A guy in a giant pickup drove by, as slowly as he could, while copious amounts of thick black exhaust covered us. And a vehicle (a pickup, if you really want to know) full of white guys was stopped at the light where they took advantage of the timing to shout racist things at us.
But it was worth it to make our views and concerns seen by people who maybe didn’t realize what was – and is – happening.

That fierced-faced player is my granddaughter Bennett. Off the soccer field, she’s the sweetest kid you’ll ever meet but she’s super competitive otherwise.
Soccer is her favorite, but she’s also played softball, basketball, volleyball, flag football, and golf. And she is, she assures me, the fastest runner in her grade – “Even faster than the boys,” she reported. I believe her.

going up against chaos
Just before the railroad overpass, there’s an L-shaped building that’s painted bright green. You can’t miss it.
It used to be a restaurant, and fading lettering on the outside of the building lists some of the options – tortas, tacos, burritos, tripas*, lengua**, and so forth. The short side of the L, toward the back of the lot, has a missing window. If you look in, you can see a mysterious pile of unbroken piñatas. And a framed picture of a giraffe with a price tag that says $39.99. That’s a pretty good price for art and a shrewd bargainer could probably get a piñatas or two thrown in.
