Crown Fountain: 9:00 pm

A completely unplanned nighttime walk around my little part of Chicago led me to a free concert at the Pritzker Pavilion, some attempts at low-light street photography around Cloud Gate, and this set of silhouettes against Crown Fountain. It was my last night in the city and I think it provided me with a lovely parting gift.

sense of place

Those streets under the L are, to me, the essence of Chicago. The play of light and shadow, the sounds of the trains rumbling overhead, the street traffic, the signs – all of these things are just Chicago.

barre

This scene is one that I am pretty sure I wouldn’t have noticed on my own, but my street-photography guide knew that sometimes dancers at the Joffrey stood at the barres and were visible from the street. Success!

bridge traffic – Michigan Avenue

I had some time the other day when I was in Chicago and was able to meet up with an Instagram photographer that I follow; I’ve always been drawn to his b+w street photography and we’ve had some good IG conversations.

He showed me some of his favorite late-afternoon spots for street photography, places where the light bounced around nicely to illuminate the streets and the pedestrians in delightful, surprising, and perfect ways. He taught me a lot; additionally, it was just delightful to finally get to meet in person.

I’ve said it before and I’ll bet I’ll say it again – making personal connections via online photography platforms is a completely unexpected benefit of this whole photo deal I’ve gotten myself into.

the world as we knew it, 2

“The trouble with normal is it always get worse” – a Bruce Cockburn lyric, written in 1981.

“Each time we allow ourselves to get used to some new ugliness, we set the stage for something worse. It wasn’t hard, even back then, to see what was coming.” – a Bruce Cockburn comment on that lyric, from 2001.
