The hurricane took what it wanted

On August 26, 2017, about 25 miles from right here, Hurricane Harvey made landfall. It was a Category 4 storm, and is tied with Hurricane Katrina as the costliest tropical cyclone on record.

And here we are, closing in on two years after the storm, and damage is still visible across a wide swath of South Texas.

Your guess is as good as mine

Yes, well, I don’t have any idea what the hell all this means.

It didn’t look that lucky

Some sort of a gameroom, holding down a corner. Evidently, they no longer provide a sweepstakes, as that’s been (sort of) edited out.

Actually, they no longer provide anything: it’s out of business. A man from the house next door came over to see if I was interested in purchasing the building. He looked very confused when I said that I just wanted to photograph the place. I get that a lot.

Andy’s fiesta

Even though Andy’s claims to have just about anything you could need (Cocktails! Curios! Restaurant! Meeting Rooms! Drive-up Window!), I think the availability of all of those things is exaggerated. Which is, of course, my favorite thing about it.

Prairie Window

This old church is the main – some would say only – landmark in Taiban, New Mexico. It’s on the route between home and Albuquerque or Santa Fe, and I stop in nearly every time I’m through town. Last spring, the glassless windows were nice frames for a view of the prairie east of town.
