Dennis Hopper was nearby
Our traveling companions were keen to find Dennis Hopper’s grave, which is not all that easily accomplished. But we stuck it out, and eventually located it.
In the meantime, there was this fantastic view of the mountains north of us.

Josh, in the wind
I got my photographic start by making images of roadside crosses; I spent the better part of a decade stopping at almost every one that I saw. And then, one day, I was done. Just like that. (This is the last one I photographed from that time; the poem with it is almost a word-for-word account of what a woman who lived by the cross told me.)
Perhaps from habit, perhaps because the project’s not really finished yet, or from a combination of those two things, I still notice crosses and other memorials along the road. And sometimes, I do still pull over and make a few images. This one called to me, for reasons that I don’t understand. But of course I stopped. I had to.

Hard Water Area
The water around here, pumped to the surface from the Ogallala Aquifer, is hard – full of dissolved minerals and high in calcium and magnesium carbonates.
And it sure does seem odd that water could be harmful enough to require a warning sign, but hard water can indeed damage paint on a car. Really!
I’ve never seen a sign like this before, though, and my brain just refused to believe was it was seeing, and translated the sign to read “Hard Hat Area” but that didn’t make any more sense. Sometimes my brain gets ahead of itself like that, but it usually comes around. Eventually.
