It’s a matter of priorities

For fiscal reasons, I am assuming, a lot of little towns forgo opening the municipal swimming pools during the summer.

The long and well-lighted hallway

091116

This is a pretty crappy hotel – cardboard boxes and other flammable stuff stored in the fire exit, lumpy pillows, exfoliating towels, etc. But it did have this going for it: a nice view of a long, lighted hallway.

So, there’s that.

Couldn’t drag me away

Actual conversation:

Me – Look at that cloud! I don’t think we’d better make any more stops. We need to get away from that storm.

Me – Wait! I need to get that shot.

They do go on

This store, The Famous, has been out of business for years – ten or fifteen, maybe. The last window displays are still there, in all of their faded, out-of-fashion glory. Like this dimpled lad, with his platinum hair and sun-burnt tuxedo. And, isn’t he wearing a surprising amount of eye makeup? Or, maybe that’s what you do when you wear a tux; my experience is pretty limited.

First Date

090816

In the summer of 1974, I went to this restaurant for a date with a boy who would go on to become my ex-boyfriend.

The restaurant fared better, and lasted until just a couple of years ago. New owners decided on a full-scale renovation before re-opening; unfortunately they were in over their heads and the renovation wasn’t completed. The building’s vacant and nothing seems to be going on there at all. Except for the usual incremental deterioration, which will probably only get noticed after it’s too late to stop it.
