the wet day

“That rain had been festering all day.” -a thing our waitress said to another customer over at the Joliet Route 66 Diner in downtown Joliet.

(One more reason why I love to listen to people talking. Once, in a different diner in a different town, I heard the cook announce she was going outside to smoke “a piece” of a cigarette.)

Saint Anthony

I don’t know that I have ever seen a hospital advertisement on a bridge. It did make me wonder about the safety of the road ahead – like maybe if you got in a wreck, you’d remember that the last thing you’d seen said “Saint Anthony Hospital” and you’d be coherent enough to tell the EMS that was where you wanted to be taken.

And on another note, that bridge itself looks like it might need some kind of medical attention.

PS: This was made from the passenger seat. In case you were worried.

This image is the confluence of a few things:

  1. My friend’s daughter participated in a bodybuilding competition and so I tagged along, with a camera.
  2. I am trying to shoot more things that are outside of my normal range of subjects.
  3. I had that narrow depth of field assignment staring me in the face.

And this is what happened.

Here’s another image that I made for my online photography class.

Shooting a specific assignment that was subject to an image review by the instructor made me really nervous (even though the instructor is the nicest person ever). I had some ideas of shots and the first attempts at these pre-planned images were, in a word, awful. I felt a little discouraged but kept going, kept my eyes open for possibilities, and hoped I wasn’t going to be That Person in class with the stupid-looking homework assignment. (Also: with digital homework, you cannot use “the dog ate my homework” excuse. FYI.)

Anyway, I didn’t even notice this scene at first, but it eventually dawned on me that it held some possibilities for that assignment. Sometimes I can be remarkably slow at noticing the perfectly obvious things that are RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME.

During my trip to Chicago, I was working on an assignment for an online photography class on narrow depth of field. Because I was sort of obsessive about looking for photos to submit for the image review, and because I had already thought about the possibilities at a Cubs game, I was ready when the gentleman a few rows ahead of me held his phone up to get a photo of the action. Without that assignment in my head, I probably wouldn’t have even noticed what he was doing. It was nice of him to help me with my assignment, don’t you think?
