beyond adobe lies the white place

Perhaps I’ve mentioned this previously: I have a crush on New Mexico. There’s just nowhere else that looks…this way.

My great thanks to my great friend David Marks for spending a whole day driving me around, showing me the things I didn’t know to look for. Like this place, a melting-away adobe church with a view of the famous White Place through an opening in the wall.

This guy was awesome: he turned his chair around so he could watch the people getting off the plane.

Or, this guy was creepy: he turned his chair around so he could watch the people getting off the plane.

It felt like it could have gone either way.

Goodness – where did the middle of that person go? It feels like seeing the inside of a magic trick.

(In addition to reading a book* while I waited for my flight, I also made a few photos. That first thing might surprise you, but the second one won’t. I’m pretty sure.)

*I read Three by Valérie Perrin, which met my criteria of being long – 550 pages – and being a paperback. I bought it at Magic City Books in Tulsa, which is an awesome bookstore that you ought to visit.

it gets worse from here

Sun and wind and time have not been kind to this grave-side flag. And it is only going to get worse unless someone steps in to replace it.

death comes

I really like to photograph cemeteries and on a recent trip to New Mexico, they were really calling to me. Calling to me photographically, I mean, not in a “why don’t you come join us?” way.

The textures, the symbols, the stories that remain mysterious to me, the cultural and geographical differences all draw me in. And once I’m drawn in, you know for sure I’ll make photos.
