Small offerings: what now my love

This building’s roof was caved in, and the inside of the place was piled with roof rubble and other junk. A series of small offerings had been lined up on the window ledge (that’s a cookbook, open to a recipe for something called Crème Moka.)

And on the ground? Oh, that’s Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass’s record “What Now My Love”, a big hit (#1 on the Billboard Album chart for nine weeks!) in 1966. My friend Gerald, a former professional trumpet player, once described Mr. Alpert as a “hack” trumpet player. As far as I know, Gerald was not the person who left that record there on the sidewalk….

Constant flow of visitors

This place has been photographed approximately infinity number of times*, and there’s nothing I feel I can add by taking/posting photos of the front of it.

But I did go around back (which you already know) and got a few shots of visitors. You’d have to work hard to find a spot that’s more remote that this, but there was still a steady flow of visitors. Most of them stayed in front, though, which I was happy about.

*Go ahead. Google “Prada Marfa images.” I’ll wait.

Grotto

On my only other visit to Shafter, the church door was unlocked and I was able to get some photos inside. I didn’t realize how much I was looking forward to shooting inside there again, in muted light this time, until I discovered the door I’d gone in before was locked. And so were all the others. It was a disappointment.

But at least I got to see this, on the back of the church.

Empty Saddle (Club)

I sure hate to see this place go. I’ve had a few beers there in my time.

Community Message Board

I found an informal communication system inside this abandoned building. I also found some nice light slanting through the room.
