time travel
Hey, so if you are in search of a motel that will let you time-travel back to 1983, I think I’ve found the place you’re looking for. It had:
- Seafoam green carpet
- Pink and burgundy wallpaper
- Bedspreads
- Headboards like in your childhood bedroom
But also it was clean and the noise from the window air conditioner gave me a bit of soothing white noise for a good night’s rest.

reading (with Abe)
Of course, when you are in the Land of Lincoln you’ve got to expect a lot of Abe-related stuff.
In addition to the giant covered wagon with book-reading Abe, there is a marker downtown commemorating the time in 1853 when our boy Abe christened the town (just named Lincoln!) with watermelon juice. (“From a cup,” according to the ever-helpful EZ Route 66 Guide for Travelers.)
And both of these things illustrate why you need to get off the damn interstate and look around in these little towns.

an easter egg
So, you know that I like to find abandoned places to photograph. And you know that I will take any opportunity to shoot the interiors, capturing the stuff that’s left behind. So nothing about this image will surprise you, probably.
My second favorite part of the image are the handprints on the dusty booth. And my favorite part is the little Route 66 sign, hidden away on the back wall.

terminal
This was not the first time I’d stopped at this abandoned place in Santa Rosa, and I am relatively sure it wasn’t the last time, either. Santa Rosa is one of my favorite places to shoot, as it’s got a nice range of the subjects I like to capture. You know what I mean….
