As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, some people slowly ease their way into this cold water. And some of them opt for the quick-entry method.

Me? Oh, I chose to stay dry.

This place is spring-fed and the water’s at a constant temperature of 62° – many people choose to ease their way in, stopping for a few minutes on the ledge until they reckon they won’t actually freeze if they get all the way wet.

the stillness of the day

By mid-morning, the place was full of swimmers and scuba divers, which is why I went early – it’s the only time all day to see mirror-smooth water.

As soon as I saw that sign, I knew I needed to make this photo. At first I thought it just absolutely needed to have the spires of St. Rosa Catholic Church rising behind it. And so that’s the way I framed the image and the way I made the first few shots.

But as soon as I saw the phone booth (a phone booth!), the spires became completely unimportant.

snacking

If you know anything at all about my photographic eye, you probably know that it’s drawn to the things that are worn out, broken, used up, less than beautiful, easily overlooked.

And that’s why, when I was in the beautiful Beacon Hill neighborhood, I photographed what was left of these leaves after something had snacked on them.
