second-story man

I really don’t have the faintest idea what that guy was doing up there – the one standing in front of the red window. It’s not like it was a balcony. It’s not like it was balcony weather. I just don’t know. It may have had something to do with the spirit merchant on the ground floor or it might not have. Other than that guy, I suspect that no one else knows. Or even noticed what was going on.

It was one of those reflex photos – I saw it and made the shot without taking time to do stuff like composing it or anything. The moment was there and then it was gone, possibly because a bus drove by.

cotton lint

There’s an excellent BBQ place in Slaton; it’s called Pitforks and Smokerings. You need to go, but get there early because they sell out pretty fast.

It’s housed in an old gas station and there’s an outdoor dining area, marked by black net, where the fuel pumps used to be. This is a shot of the netting that slows down the wind*, provides a bit of shade, and snags up cotton lint from the gin across the road.

*I almost said “breaks the wind” but realized that wasn’t AT ALL what I was trying to say.

red castle

This was the view from our vacation rental in Edinburgh. I wonder if that construction situation on the left side is finished and how soon I ought to go back to get another photo…

abbey strand (with rain)

I didn’t actually even own an umbrella until I was 19 years old and was moving from Lubbock to a wetter locale for college. And then I went someplace even wetter for grad school, where I know for sure I kept umbrellas in my car all the time. But then I came back to Lubbock and probably don’t quite recall how to open an umbrella. And when I went to Scotland last year, I didn’t even take an umbrella with me. I’m not a total idiot – I had a waterproof coat with a hood and anyway how can you hold an umbrella AND use a camera?

If you stay in one spot long enough and take a million photos you might get one that nearly works….
