Those four headstones are huddled together under three trees, living out their time in the shade.

Mr. Leatherwood’s Hill

My standby Roads of Texas book indicated a cemetery along this county road. And sure enough, there it was. There were probably fewer than 100 marked graves, a handful of trees, and a burst of yellow flowers. And a lot of sky.

Delivery Options

Rural Lubbock County isn’t hampered by any sort of zoning, or even codes/code enforcement. As a result, there are some pretty sketchy things out there on the edge of town. But the four-mailbox array was a nice find, nonetheless.

Her anointed head

Maybe she sat in the sun on purpose, having checked the weather forecast and knowing the sunny days were about over. Or maybe she’d just been there so long that the sunlight caught up to her. But in any case, my photographer’s eye was caught by the way the sunlight anointed her head, making it the brightest thing in the room.
