This place? Again?
There’s really just one thing of photographic interest in this tiny town – that old church building – and it’s been photographed within an inch of its life. I’ve posted a lot of images of it over the years, making me complicit in the crime of over-shooting.
The last time I was through town, I decided to do something completely unprecedented: I turned off the highway on the other whole side of town* from the church and made some photos. But then, the old place drew me in, and I walked down a dirt road for an unobstructed view. Like every other photographer who’s been here, I just can’t look away.

Telephone Directory
See that bag on the ground in front of the door? It’s the new telephone directory. That raises a few questions, doesn’t it?

Slow death is certain
There’s only one way this is going to end: in a pile on the ground surrounded by weeds and covered over by the big sky. It won’t happen quickly, probably, but it will happen.

Under observation
Remember yesterday, when I said I looked through a broken window and found no surprises?
I thought the same thing was going on here, in the very next window to the east. I saw those scales and the three slants of light, and got the shot. Later, when I got home and downloaded the SD card, I saw what I had somehow missed in the moment – that owl (and those talons!). And there was my surprise…
